Stone House Art Gallery
SHAG stands for Stone House Art Gallery, and is an artist run project space located in a repurposed garage in Charlotte, North Carolina. The intent of SHAG is to allow emerging artists the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting with the freedom to direct the content and curation of their exhibitions. Artists from an array of backgrounds and disciplines are able to generate spatial conversations with their work that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to do, due to lack of exhibition space.
The objective of SHAG is to expand the breadth and awareness of contemporary art in the Charlotte area and beyond via exposure through the SHAG platform. Through this network of connectivity artists are rewarded with exposure and professional growth, and likewise the audience is rewarded with stimulating new artwork. SHAG promotes the re-imagining of domestic space as a method for generating self-driven curatorial practices. Additionally, the gallery seeks to facilitate dialogue about the state of contemporary art in relationship to global art concerns and DIY culture. SHAG embodies the possibilities for reusable space through use of curatorial vernacular, while promoting viewer and artist engagement in the age of digital encounters.
