Wing Haven Lecture Series: The History of Vegetable Gardening in the South
Learn the history of vegetable gardening in the South from Garden Curator Adrienne Roethling of Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden. Speaker Adrienne Roethling will share her expertise on the history of vegetable gardening through the lens of the garden from which she hails: Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden. This lovely garden is situated in the historic district of Kernersville, North Carolina, just 90 miles northeast of Charlotte.
Key historical displays are carried throughout Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden - one example is the Moravian Style Kitchen Garden. It is modeled after the first settlers of this region. The kitchen garden has a Moravian Quilt representation in four raised beds totaling 1,000 square feet of growing space, which allows the garden staff the opportunity to display over three seasons and showcases the quilt pattern through the use of plants.
