The University of North Florida excavation of the 16th century Mocama (Timucua) town of Sarabay, a settlement near Jacksonville, Florida mentioned in early French and Spanish accounts. Excavations recovered a wide range of artifacts, including Spanish ceramics and items depicting religious imagery. In the presumed center of the town, UNF students unearthed the outline of a large Indigenous post-in-the ground building, measuring about 20 meters in diameter. Dating to circa 1580s-1620s, we suspect that this structure is the community council house. This presentation by Keith Ashley, Archaeologist and Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Florida, provides an overview of our excavations at Sarabay and situates the site within the broader Mocama landscape.

Presented virtually. To attend via Zoom, register via this link: https://bit.ly/4jtH0ae
