Celebrate the Life Bertha Maxwell-roddey
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library - Allegra Westbrooks Regional Library
Presented by Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room (Charlotte Mecklenburg Library)
The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room and the Allegra Westbrooks Regional Library proudly present Dr. Sonya Ramsey, who will discuss her new book, Bertha Maxwell-Roddey: A Modern-Day Race Woman and the Power of Black Leadership. Bertha Maxwell-Roddey became one of Charlotte’s first Black women principals of a white elementary school. She was the founding director of UNC Charlotte’s Africana Studies Department and in 1974, she cofounded the Afro-American Cultural and Service Center, now the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Art & Culture. Maxwell-Roddey founded the National Council for Black Studies. She retired from academics as the Frank Porter Graham Professor Emeritus at UNC Charlotte. Dr. Maxwell-Roddey exemplifies how one woman can make a big difference in her community.
