EXPLORE: Beginner Guitar Workshops

EXPLORE: Beginner Guitar Workshops is a 4-week course hosted by Dear Soul Music Co. sponsored by ASC Culture Blocks, a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County. In this free course, adults ages 18+ are invited to explore and deepen their guitar playing in a group environment with instruction by Brosnan Granger & Chelsea Locklear.

For participants that do not own a guitar, 10 guitars are available on reserve at no cost to ensure accessibility. This course provides foundational lessons & exercises while playing in a group setting.

The course overview is as follows:

Week 1 (Feb 21): Getting To Know Your Guitar

-To identify parts of your guitar and their use

-To name and play the open strings

-Learning to read a tablature

-TASK: Playing your one-string first scales

Week 2 (Feb 28): Playing Your Guitar Practically

-To explore playing various strumming patterns

-To learn major open chords

-Learning to read a chord chart

-TASK: Playing your first chord progression

Week 3 (March 7): Fundamental Guitar Skills

-To explore different approaches to practicing guitar

-To learn minor open chords

-To build dexterity in your fingers

-TASK: Playing group songs as a class!

Week 4 (March 14): Getting The Most Out of Your Guitar

-To introduce finger picking exercises

-To practice making melodies

-To discuss different types of guitars

-TASK: Determining NEXT STEPS for practicing guitar independently!
