Refugee, Asylum and Humanitarian law in the U.S.: Examining Legal Implications and the Human Cost of Inhumane Policies

DEIRDRE M. GIBLIN has practiced immigration law for over 25 years, with a specialty in asylum, refugee and humanitarian law.
As an attorney at the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, she advocates for and defends the rights of immigrants and leads and participates in national, regional and statewide coalitions.
Attorney Giblin has co-founded and managed two legal/mental health collaboratives funded by the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture and designated by the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs to train lawyers and health professionals in trauma-informed practices for work with refugees and asylum seekers.
She is a member of Amnesty International's Leadership Circle and UNICEF USA, and works on initiatives with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) such as the DOJ Immigration Court National Pilot Pro Bono Detention Bond project, the 2017 Team Logan Muslim Ban Injunction Monitoring Compliance Project, and most recently the legal services response to the Martha’s Vineyard Venezuelan arrivals and the Boston Mayor’s office “New Arrivals” response.
With the ABA International Law Section, she has worked on family separation border issues and through the Women’s Bar Association works on legislation relative to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and immigrant survivors of crimes.
She is a frequent lecturer and clinical supervisor at New England colleges and law schools. She was a Case Scholar at Boston University, a Parker Scholar at Columbia Law School, and earned her J.D. from The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School in 1993.
