Free Fiber Arts Workshops (All-Levels)

Learn basic skills for traditional crafts such as weaving, knitting, crochet, macrame and embroidery-and how to personalize your projects with a fun contemporary twist. These workshops are sponsored by Culture Blocks— a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County.

Tapestry for beginners: Saturday, July 9th, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Make your own handwoven tapestry on a lap loom in this 2-hour workshop. We’ll work through all the steps you need to know to create your own woven masterpiece, from start to finish, with plenty of time to explore and play with different materials and techniques. Ages 16+ . Max. 12 participants 

Crochet for beginners: Monday, July 11th, 5:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m.  

Want to stitch your own scarf, sweater, or stuffed animal? This is the class for you. Learn basic crochet stitches and get a crash course on how to read crochet patterns. We’ll get you started on a beginner-friendly scarf pattern, but you’ll also leave this workshop a toolkit of skills, so you can confidently start more sophisticated projects. Ages 16+. Max. 12 participants 

Macrame for beginners: Monday, July 25th, 5:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m.

Learn basic macrame knots to make your own piece of boho décor. You’ll get familiar with 5 basic macrame knots and use them to create a knotted tapestry to take home. Ages 16+. Max. 12 participants 

Knitting for Beginners : Saturday, August 6th, 10:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.  

In this class, we’ll teach you basic knitting techniques and show you how to read a basic pattern. We’ll get you started with a basic scarf pattern and make sure you have all the skills you need to finish it up at home. Ages 16+. Max. 12 participants.
