July 14 – Crank the Heat
What’s hotter than noon of the 14th of July? The race track, of course. As the NASCAR season heats up, so does the Southern summer. Through track building and exploration, we’ll learn how weather and geography affect racing, and how clay, asphalt and sand fare in such heated conditions.
August 11 – Course Test
We love NASCAR. Celebrate all things NASCAR—legends, fans, teams and crew—while discovering the “hidden” individuals who’ve helped keep the wheels on the track. Test your racing knowledge in a fast-paced game of NASCARology (Jr. Edition), then put yourself in front of the camera at Victory Lane.
September 8 – Race Day Rewind
2018 marks 70 years of NASCAR racing. Journey back in time to discover what life was like in 1948 when the sanctioning body was born. In conjunction with our current temporary exhibit, “1948: Proving Grounds,” we’ll explore old-school race weekends, how people traveled to the track, food, celebrations, clothes, sounds and more.
October 13 – Seeing Sparks
How does a little spark send a 3,000-pound object jetting from 0 to 200 mph? During this science-themed workshop, we race through a series of fun experiments to discover the chemical reactions that move cars and the safety measures that protect drivers and crew members.
November 10 – Under the Hood
The engines is the heart of a race car, and the chassis and frame are the skeleton. Together, we’ll break down the pieces and parts of a race car—how they’re made, where they go and what they do. Then we’ll talk about how they work together to get drivers into high gear.
December 8 – Off-Seasons Greetings
Celebrate the holidays with a home track roundup. Experience some of the ways tracks keep things festive in the “off-season,” and create a NASCAR-themed gift to give the race fan in your life.
January 12 – Inductee Orientation
Welcome to the NASCAR Hall of Fame family, Class of 2019. Celebrate our new inductees by learning how and why these legends got into the Hall of Fame. Walk 1/2 a mile in their shoes, and see how their accomplishments impact NASCAR today. We’ll share their stories and will have a hands-on activity based on their contributions to the sport.
February 9 – Getting Drafty
Air is more than what we breathe. During National Engineers Week, discover the unseen competitor in racing that has proved to be a big influencer: aerodynamics. To learn more about this critical component in racing strategy, we’ll conduct air experiments, delve into the career of an aerodynamicist and test a car in a wind tunnel.
March – Keep on Truckin’
From the transporter to the Camping World Truck Series, trucks are everywhere in NASCAR. Learn why truck racing is different from car racing and how to make your own hopped-up pickup. Then explore the teams—and trucks—that make sure all kinds of race cars get from track to track.
April - Science in Action
In celebration of NC Science Month, join us as we look at science’s role in different NASCAR careers. Be an official, a tire specialist, a spotter, an engine specialist or the fuel man to discover the science in each and every job both on and off the track.
May – Think Tank
Problem? We need more speed. Solution? That’s up to you. For decades, NASCAR engineers have answered this very same question. Now we put you in the inventor’s seat to plan, create and improve your own solution. Just in time for Inventors Month, we’ll have a pop-up maker space where you can compare your idea with those of fellow visitors and students.
