What Happened Here? An Urban Bike Tour and History Talk
"What Happened Here?" will explore neighborhood planning and identity in Charlotte. On a 5.5 mile route through Historic West End neighborhoods, and through Uptown Charlotte, participants will see and imagine how Charlotte was developed, and what policies and programs contributed to the racial and economic segregation of the city. The highlight of the tour will be a stop at the site of former Second Ward High School. There, alumni from Second Ward HS will meet the group for a talk about the history of Second Ward, also called "Brooklyn," and a discussion of how Urban Renewal destroyed that community, and how the legacy of Urban Renewal continues to impact neighborhoods today.
This event begins and ends at Five Points Plaza, 1601 W Trade St, adjacent to Mosaic Village (which is part of Johnson C Smith University). The ride is appropriate for most levels, though parents may want to consider whether children under 10 will be physically able to handle the length. Riders should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the ride.
Bikes are available through Charlotte B-Cycle if needed.
Helmets are required for all participants.
This event is sponsored by Culture Blocks - a community partnership between ASC, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to bring arts and cultural experiences closer to where residents live. Culture Blocks is funded by Mecklenburg County. This event is being organized by QC Family Tree, in partnership with Second Ward High School National Alumni Foundation.
