The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King in Charlotte

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will host a program to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The theme of the program will be the history of King's appearances in Charlotte, the immediate effect in this city of his sudden and shocking loss, and the steps that African Americans and whites took to rebuild consensus in the aftermath of his murder.  We will bring together people who were in Charlotte in 1968 who can talk about the city's reaction to this event.  Our special guests - North Carolina State Senator Joyce Waddell, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Vilma Leake, and historian Dr. Willie Griffin - will lead a panel discussion to share their recollections and general reflections on how this event was a turning point in the history of Charlotte.
