Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique
Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique presents ‘Flow’, on view April 6th through May 26th.
‘Flow’ features new paintings by Elizabeth Foster. In this solo exhibition, Elizabeth explores the transition from structured, illustrative work to a looser, more abstract approach to her characters and stories. The exhibit will also showcase the colorful, fluid pottery forms of Elise Delfield.
Elizabeth Foster was born into a family of painters, musicians, flower arrangers, bird lovers, and creative thinkers. Growing up, imagination was considered one of the highest currencies one could possess. Holding on to the endless possibilities of that sacred childhood imagination has been essential to her painting. The Nashville TN based artist has become well known for narrative images infused with a childlike “storybook” aesthetic, tying her to past and present. Foster’s nature inspired art uses a cast of animal characters to convey stories. Her whimsical imagery has also moved beyond the canvas, with a variety of licensing projects that feature Elizabeth’s work on cards, journals and other paper goods. True to her upbringing, she is always creating and looking ahead. Of her most recent paintings, Elizabeth sites a “morphing of the flow of creativity and change; holding onto visual structure and letting go of it at the same time”. This new direction finds Elizabeth incorporating the fanciful, illustrated animals she has become known for, but painting with a loose brush to create a fresh approach to her surfaces, the stories told, and the characters she loves to explore.
Elise Delfield, of Pincu Pottery, is also inspired by nature and finds her environment a constant source of inspiration. The Bryson City, NC based potter creates functional pottery that references the rich red clay dirt of Western NC and the lush green mountains that bloom with color in spring, as well as the multi-layered colors of bird feathers and butterfly wings. Elise’s hand built or wheel thrown red earthenware pots are often altered to suggest a flower in bloom. The red clay is coated with white clay slip and decorated with flowing brushstrokes of ceramic colorants, with a style reminiscent of watercolors. With the individuality of each pot, she hopes to “enhance the pleasure of food and the nourishment of the soul” and remind the user of our earthly surroundings.
Lark & Key is open Tues-Sat from 11-5 and First Fridays until 8pm.
