Charlotte Museum of History & Hezekiah Alexander Homesite
The Charlotte Museum of History and Hezekiah Alexander Homesite comprise multiple venues on an eight-acre wooded campus in east Charlotte, and are home to the American Freedom Bell. The museum sponsors programs and activities of every age, showcasing regional history, from early Indian Villages to present-day perspectives.
The oldest structure, and the reason for the museum’s location, is the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, a 5,000 square-foot rock house. Listed on the National Register for Historic Places, the house is the oldest surviving structure in Mecklenburg County, built in 1774, and still stands on its original site. The house is accompanied by a reproduction log kitchen, barn, and reconstructed two-story springhouse.
The museum itself resides in 36,000 square feet of gallery space, and is home to both permanent and changing exhibits.
